Modena: Palazzo Ducale (former ducal palace, today military academy)

The Ducal Palace ( Palazzo Ducale in Italian ) in Modena was the seat of the Este family between the 17th and 19th centuries . The palace has been home to the renowned Accademia Militare since 1862 .

history

In 1288, the Marquis of Ferrara Obizzo d'Este took control of Modena. He initially had a castle built on this site, but it was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. In 1629, Francesco I. d'Este commissioned a number of well-known architects to design a representative mansion palace instead of a castle. Work on this building began from 1634 under the supervision of Gaspare Vigarani , continued by Bartolomeo Avanzini and Gian Lorenzo Bernini . Also Girolamo Rainaldi , Pietro da Cortona and Camillo-Guarino Guarini were involved in the construction.

On the occasion of the wedding of Rinaldo d'Este to Charlotte Felicitas von Braunschweig-Lüneburg , Marcantonio Franceschini was commissioned in 1696 to decorate the ceiling of the central hall of honor ( Italian Sala d'Onore ) with a fresco.

In the square in front of the facade of the palace (formerly Piazza Ducale , later Piazza Reale , today Piazza Roma ) stands the monument to Ciro Menotti , created in 1879 by Cesare Sighinolfi . This elongated facade has three watchtowers and a flight of stairs that lead from the courtyard up to the first floor. Inside the building there are several halls adorned with frescoes and paintings of the d'Este family, a throne room and a rococo-style room with golden panels called the “Salottino d'Oro” (“Golden Room”).

The former ducal gardens, a park with a botanical garden and a small art museum, are attached to the Palazzo Ducale.
