Palazzo Marcello dei Leoni

Palazzo Marcello dei Leoni is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the San Polo sestiere with a view of the Grand Canal between the Palazzo Dolfin and the Rio di San Tomà .

history

The palace from the 17th century belonged to the old noble Marcello family and is known by the nickname “dei Leoni” because on both sides of the main entrance there are reliefs of lions in Istrian limestone from the 13th century, probably from the church of San Tomà after it was rebuilt towards the end of the 14th century. The current building stands on the site of an older palace which, according to chroniclers from the 16th century, hosted many major festivals and which contained an important private collection of paintings by Giorgione , Titian and Giovanni Bellini .

The writer Pompeo Gherardo Molmenti also lived there , who among other things has written various books on Venetian history.

description

The palace has a ground floor with a portal that opens onto the Fondamenta del Traghetto , where there are many landing stages for gondolas . Both the first and second main floors have triple windows on the right-hand side, while on the left-hand side there are pairs of individual windows, all with round arches . On the third floor there are four window openings of no particular architectural value, presumably the result of a renovation or a recent addition.
