Palgrave Macmillan
Palgrave Macmillan is a predominantly academic literature in the field of human and social sciences published; publishing , headquartered in Basingstoke , Hampshire , England . The company represents more than 170 years of publishing history. In its current form, the publishing house was formed in 2002 through the merger of Macmillan Press and St Martin's Press Scholarly and Reference, has belonged to the Georg von Holtzbrinck ( Macmillan Publishers ) group since 2007 and has been part of the Springer Nature Group since 2015 .
History of the publisher
The name Palgrave is derived from the Palgrave family, who have had a long publication collaboration with Macmillan and achieved the highest level in the human and social sciences. As early as 1861 Macmillan published the "Golden Treasure of the Best Songs and Lyric Poems in the English Language" by Francis Turner Palgrave , a former private secretary of the later Prime Minister Wiliam Gladstone . This book became the standard work in the field. The 150th edition, published by Palgrave in 2011, appeared with a foreword by the poet Carol Ann Duffy .
Macmillan also published work by Francis Turner Palgrave's father, Sir Francis Palgrave , who was the founder of the Public Record Office , d. H. of the British State Archives, as well as the three brothers of FT Palgrave: Sir Robert Harry Inglis Palgrave, who was the banker as well as the editor of "The Palgrave Dictionary of Political Economy" and also editor of The Economist . In 1869 Macmillan published the "History of the House of Commons " of the then Secretary (clerk) of the House of Commons, Sir Reginald Francis Palgrave.
William Gifford Palgrave, in turn, was a brilliant scholar, ordained Jesuit, and spy for Napoleon III. He traveled incognito, disguised as an Arab doctor, through the Syrian and Saudi Arabian deserts and wrote a two-volume work on his travels and adventures for Macmillan. The "Tales of a One-Year Journey through Central and Eastern Arabia", published in 1865, was the most widely read book on this region until the contributions of TE Lawrence appeared.
St Martin's Press, in turn, was founded in 1952 and was one of the ten largest general publishers in the United States. The collaboration also had a long tradition. In 2000, St. Martin's Press Scholarly and Reference in the USA and Macmillan Press in Great Britain were merged, with the result that the two publishers combined their publishing activities. This new publisher was renamed Palgrave Macmillan in 2002 . In 2007, the Holtzbrinck Group bought the publishing house and incorporated it into their publishing group in 2009.

Palgrave Macmillan is a US distributor of IB Tauris Publishers, Manchester University Press, Zed Books and Pluto Press.
