Palomena viridissima is a bug from the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae).

features

The bugs are 11.0 to 14.0 millimeters long. They are grass green in color, but turn olive brown in autumn, often with a purple sheen. After overwintering, the bugs are green again. Your pronotum is convex outward at the front edge. This distinguishes the species from the similar green stink bug ( Palomena prasina ), whose pronotum edge is concave inward. In both species the scutellum has the same color as the basic body color. The second part of the antennae is 1.6 to 2 times as long as the third; in the green stink bug, these two links are about the same length.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is common in Europe with the exception of the British Isles and northern Scandinavia. In the east, the distribution extends to Central Asia. In Germany it is mainly found in the south, but is much rarer than the green stink bug. They are only found sporadically in northern Germany. In Austria it is found in all federal states, but only in isolated cases. Here, too, it is rarer than the green stink bug and its occurrence is also declining.

Way of life

Like the green stink bug, the species colonizes many different habitats. But you can find them especially in the herb layer and less often on deciduous trees. Like the green stink bug, Palomena viridissima polyphagous lives on different plants and occurs in one generation per year.
