The All-Ethiopian Socialist Movement , mostly called MEISON ( Mälla It'yop'ya Sosiyalist Nəqnaqe , also Ma'ison or Me'ison , in its own script መላ የኢትዮጵያ ሶሲያሊስት ንቅናቄ) after its Amharic abbreviation , is a socialist party in Ethiopia .

history

MEISON was founded around 1968 mainly by academics and students living in Addis Ababa as well as in Europe or North America , and in their analyzes and programmatic approaches it referred to the Soviet variety of Marxism , especially the theory of non-capitalist development . After initial skepticism, MEISON began - unlike IHAPA - to support the military government (the Derg ) and was the ideologically dominant force there from 1976 to 1977, many MEISON members fell victim to attacks by IHAPA during this time.

In 1977/78 the military group Abyot Seded around Mengistu Haile Mariam finally prevailed within the Derg ; At that time MEISON formed the EMALEDH ( Union of Marxist-Leninist Organizations of Ethiopia ) together with Abyot Seded and three smaller groups supporting the DERG . As a result of the power struggle with Mengistu many Meison members were relieved of their functions, arrested, killed (especially in rural areas) or forced into hiding, a customized fraction Kay Fana (Amharic "Red Torch" ) went into the 1979 COPWE from which the Labor Party of Ethiopia arose.

After the overthrow of the Mengistu regime in 1991, MEISON reconstituted itself as a legal socialist party, but could not build on its previous importance. In 2003 she joined the opposition alliance United Ethiopian Democratic Forces .
