Panagiotis Karkanas

Panagiotis "Takis" Karkanas ( Greek Παναγιώτης Καρκάνας , * 1963 ) is a Greek archaeologist in the field of geoarchaeology .

Karkanas obtained a bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Athens in 1986 , then studied the geology of sedimentary basins and obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Athens in 1994. in mineralogy , petrology and geochemistry . From 1994 to 2014 he worked as a geologist for the ephorie for paleoanthropology and speleology , an institution of the Greek Ministry of Culture. From 2004 to 2013 taught at the Karkanas Harokopio University in Athens, since 2014 he is at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens Director of the Malcolm H. Wiener Laboratory of Archaeological Sciences , which is primarily concerned with questions of bioarchaeology , Geoarchaeology , archaeobotany and zoo archeology . He conducts or has conducted field research in South Africa , Hungary , Albania , Cyprus , Israel , China , Spain and France .

Karkanas is or was part of the editors of Geoarchaeology , Journal of Human Evolution, and The Encyclopedia of Geoarchaeology . He is (as of 2017) the author of more than 120 scientific publications . It has (as of December 2018) an h-index of 37. In 2017, Karkanas was elected as an honorary foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 2018 as a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences .
