The men's singles of the 1987 Pan American Games was a tennis competition in Indianapolis .

Competition mode

The 43 participants were initially divided into eleven preliminary round groups of four or three players each, in which everyone played against everyone. The two group leaders advanced to the main round, which was then played in the knockout system. There was the restriction that in contrast to the preliminary round, in which up to three players per country could take part, only two participants per country were allowed to play in the main round. For such a third player, a player from the same preliminary round group then moved up.

Preliminary round

Preliminary remark: As there is no official source for the results, the order of the groups and their designation is unknown. As a working basis, we use Arabic numerals and align the groups according to the order in which the first day of the match was set in the Indianapolis Star .

Comment: The Brazilian Nelson Aerts, who was actually qualified for the main round and had already been drawn there, was excluded from the tournament at the instigation of his opponent's association from Costa Rica for violating the amateur regulations of the Pan American Sports Organization (ODEPA). Fourth-placed Michael Wight took his place, as third-placed Fabio Sical from Guatemala was the third player from his country and was not eligible to play in the main round.
