Pangasius macronema is a species of fish in the genus Pangasius within the shark catfish family. The species has a disjoint range that includes populations in the Mae Nam Chao Phraya and Mekong in Thailand , Cambodia , Laos and Vietnam as well as those in Indonesia on Java and southern Borneo . The species is fished commercially.

features

Pangasius macronema is a relatively small and slender species with a narrow head and mouth. It reaches a body length of about 20 cm. The barbels reach a length that goes beyond the base of the pectoral fin. The eyes are big. The adipose fin is very small. Two stripes run along the sideline and below that meet at the base of the pectoral fin. The males have a much larger anal fin with elongated soft rays and after mating usually have a bloody scratch on both sides, which is probably caused by the hard rays of the pectoral fins of the females. Neither a sexual dimorphism of the anal fin, nor noticeable scratches are found in other pangasius species.

The gill trap has 37 to 45 long, slender rays on the first arch.

Way of life

The species colonizes rivers and lakes in large schools . In the rainy season it migrates to the floodplains. Mollusks, crustaceans, insects and small fish serve as food.
