Pangasius polyuranodon is a species of fish in the genus Pangasius within the shark catfish family. The species occurs on Sumatra and Borneo . In 2002 the species Pangasius elongatus and Pangasius mahakamensis were spun offfrom the species.

features

The body of Pangasius polyuranodon is elongated and slender with a length of 60 to a maximum of about 80 cm. The snout is large and rounded with a lower mouth. The tooth plate on the intermaxillary bone is barely visible when the mouth is closed. The eyes are large and sit a little below half head height. The barbels on the lower jaw are very short. The gill trap has 19 to 30 rays. The body is olive to greenish-gray, the lower flanks and the belly are whitish. The dorsal, pectoral and caudal fins are yellowish, the other fins are pale. Fish from estuary areas have a golden glow on their head, back and upper flanks.

Way of life

The species mainly inhabits estuaries and the lower sections of the river, but also migrates upstream in the rainy season. The animals are opportunistic omnivores .
