Panopticon is an American metal band .

history

The band was started in 2007 by Austin L. Lunn alias A. Lundr as a solo project. Guest musicians played regularly on the albums. The project is currently under contract with the Bindrune Recordings label .

style

music

The first releases were influenced by bands like Wolves in the Throne Room , Weakling and Skagos and combined the styles of black metal and post-rock . "Panopticon's music ... is a crazy swirl of different elements, assembled roughly into an album of undoubted power." Typical are melodic riffs and "wild" but precise drums. The basic mood of the Split 12 "with Vestiges was described as melancholy.

On the Kentucky LP , Lunn also used country- style acoustic guitars and clear vocals, so the album begins with an intro made of bluegrass , which first leads to fast black metal and later Alcest- like post-metal .

The band does not use digital effects devices in their productions, all tracks are recorded in analog format.

Texts

The band openly represents left-wing political views, which can also be seen in the lyrics. In the liner notes of Collapse there is the statement: "the basic premise behind Collapse is destruction and rebirth ... [it] documents a fictional uprising and revolution in the wake of economic strife, military occupation and totalitarianism"

The album Kentucky deals explicitly with the environmental impact of coal mining in the Midwest . This is how the Kentucky songs were called "Black Metal Protest Songs ":

"A small point, but symptomatic of something more fundamental. Panopticon's albums become ever-more explicitly political, to the extent that this record might be appropriately described as a set of black metal protest songs "
