Rumen tympany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The rumen symptom ("flatulence") is a disease of ruminants , which is characterized by an increased accumulation of gas in the rumen . There are three forms:

  • Acute rumen tympany ( Tympania ruminis acuta ) with dorsal gas bladder
  • acute rumen tympany with foamy mixing of the contents
  • chronic relapsing rumen tympany ( Tympania ruminis chronica recidivaria )

Acute rumen tympany with dorsal gas bubble

This form of tympany arises from disturbance of the trunk . The causes are obstruction of the stomach entrance, innervation disorders ( Hoflund syndrome , damage to the vagus nerve ), rumen acidosis , rumen alkalosis , clogging of the throat, hypocalcemia or inflammatory diseases of other abdominal cavity organs .

The disease occurs in individual animals and is characterized by a pronounced bulging of the left flank . For treatment, the gas is released from the rumen via a nasopharyngeal tube. It may be necessary to first remove a foreign body in the esophagus . In life-threatening conditions, the gas can be released through a trocar by a rumen stab in the left flank .

Acute rumen tympany with foamy mixing of the contents

The exact origin of this form of the disease is not known. In any case, certain plant ingredients play a role as well as rations with a high proportion of easily digestible carbohydrates and soluble proteins and little crude fiber . Frequent triggers are legumes such as alfalfa and clover, young grass, spent grains , stillage , young rape, grain, beet ... Due to the rapid fermentation in the rumen and the viscous rumen content, the gas bubbles remain trapped and cannot be released through the trunk.

The acute rumen tympany with foamy mixing of the contents usually occurs in several animals in the herd. The rumen can be reached with a probe, but there is no emission. A rumen sting does not bring any improvement; in life-threatening cases, a rumen incision can be made, in which the small-bubble contents can be emptied. If the course is normal, foam-breaking drugs ( antizymotics ) such as polydimethylsiloxane are indicated.

Chronic-recurrent rumen symptom

The chronically recurrent rumen symptom occurs in older cows primarily as a symptom of other diseases of the digestive organs or of general diseases. The bulging of the left flank is usually moderate. The therapy depends on the underlying disease, under certain circumstances only life-sustaining measures are indicated until calving.
