The tank destroyer 90 is on the Radschützenpanzer mowag piranha constructed Raketenjagdpanzer , since 1990 in the Swiss army is in use and is made from 2019 successively out of service.
It replaced the outdated recoilless guns of the 10.6 cm rsf Pak 58 type (US designation M40 BAT ).
31 tank destroyer companies were formed with 310 vehicles. Of these, 28 were assigned to the infantry (including three in the mountain divisions) and three to the mechanized and light troops (cyclist regiments ).
The Panzerjäger 90 is a Mowag Piranha IB 6 × 6 on which a rotating one-man weapon turret of the type ALT from Norway is installed. Two launchers for TOW anti-tank guided weapons are mounted on the weapon tower. There are also eight 7.6 cm smoke throwers attached to the gun tower. Inside the vehicle, 10 BGM-71D TOW-2s are stored, which are loaded into the weapon turret with a semi-automatic loading device. The Swiss Army procured 12,000 TOW guided missiles for the 310 Panzerjäger 90.
The five-man crew consists of a driver, commander, shooter, reserve shooter and combat orderly .
Due to its light armor, the tank destroyer cannot engage in duels with battle tanks. Its only advantage is the long range of the missile, which is a maximum of 3.75 km. The TOW missile can penetrate 900 mm of armor steel regardless of the distance . The mission called for the vehicle to wait in camouflage until the enemy is within range. After fighting the target, he should then immediately withdraw while throwing fog.
Due to the lack of a machine gun, he is also easily attackable by infantry . Its only protection is its high acceleration and its smoke launchers. From 2006, 160 Pzj 90s were converted into command tanks.
With the armaments program of 2018, the decommissioning of the remaining tank destroyers was requested.
