Paolo Ghiringhelli

Paolo Ghiringhelli OSB ; also Paul ; Baptismal name: Peter Maurus Josef Aloys (born October 15, 1778 in Bellinzona , † March 18, 1861 in Einsiedeln ) was a Swiss Benedictine and governor.

Life

Paolo Ghiringhelli was the son of Carlo Ghiringhelli and his wife Felicita Molo.

He attended school in Bellinzona and studied theology at Einsiedeln Abbey as well as at Neresheim Abbey and St. Georgenberg-Fiecht Abbey . On August 15, 1796, he took the Benedictine vow with Abbot Beat Küttel and was ordained a priest on December 19, 1802 .

During his activity as a teacher at the Benedictine College Bellinzona from 1804 to 1823 he renewed the school curriculum and also compiled the teaching materials for the students. In 1823 he was called back to Einsiedeln as head chef and then spent from October 20, 1827 to January 5, 1858 as governor in the Freudenfels governorate in the Eschenz community . On August 9, 1859 he returned to the Einsiedeln monastery and died as a senior member of the monastery and the congregation .

Writing

He wrote a topographical-statistical representation of the Canton of Ticino with a geographical map drawn up by him in the appendix; this writing was published in the Helvetic Almanac for 1812 and was the first description of the new canton.

He also worked with the dialect researcher Franz Joseph Stalder ; He translated the parable of the prodigal son into the Ticino dialects , which is contained in the collection Die Landessprachen der Schweiz published in 1819 .

His memorandum on the political events in Ticino from 1813 to 1814, in which he spoke out in favor of Bellinzona as the canton's capital, was not published.
