Paolo Marcellini (born June 25, 1947 in Fabriano ) is an Italian mathematician who deals with analysis. He is a professor at the University of Florence .

Marcellini obtained his Laureate Degree in 1971 at the University of Rome and completed postgraduate studies ( perfecting ) at the Scuola Normale Superiore with Ennio de Giorgi from 1971 to 1973 . Then he was assistant and finally lecturer at the University of Florence, from 1981 Associate Professor at the University of Naples and then at the University of Tor Vergata in Rome. Since 1985 he has been Professor of Analysis in Florence. There he was chairman of the faculty for mathematics, physics and natural science, head of the mathematics faculty Ulisse Dini and coordinator of the graduate school in mathematics (doctoral program).

He was visiting scholar in Paris, Bonn (University and Max Planck Institute), Berkeley, Lausanne, Oxford, Carnegie-Mellon University, Lisbon, Buenos Aires, Novosibirsk, at the Institute for Advanced Study , Zurich, Cologne, Tokyo, the Australian National University and the Mittag-Leffler Institute .

He deals with the calculus of variations and partial differential equations including applications in, for example, nonlinear elasticity theory and biology.

From 1999 to 2003 he was on the board of directors of the Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica in Rome. In 2007 he became a member of the Academy of Sciences of Tuscany La Colombaria.
