Papa Susso

Alhaji Papa Bunka Susso (born September 29, 1947 in Sotuma Sere ) is a musician and Jeli from Gambia . He played the West African instrument Kora , a 21-string bridge harp.

Life

Susso attended elementary school from 1960 to 1963, then he attended Armitage High School in Georgetown until 1965 . After completing secondary school, he joined a job as an assistant at the Department of Agriculture ( English Ministry of Agricultural and Natural Resources ) to. Then he received a scholarship to study at Cuttington University in Suakoko . There he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1969 and returned to Gambia. It started operating as a senior auditor at the Ministry of Labor ( English Ministry of Work and Communications ) to. Susso was also temporarily employed at the Gambian embassy in Freetown .

At one point he gave up his job and returned to playing the kora he had learned from his father at the age of five. He became chief kora player in the Gambia National Cultural Troupe , under the responsibility of the Ministry of Culture ( English Ministry of Education and Culture played). In 1974 he left the group and founded his own organization, The Manding Music and Dance Limited . The aim of this organization was to research and present the history and traditions of the Mandinka. The organization should also support the artists in portraying these traditions. He later became director of the Koriya Musa Research Center .
