Papilio maackii is a butterfly (day butterfly ) from the family of the knight butterfly (Papilionidae). The species epithet honors the Russian naturalist Richard Karlowitsch Maack .

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 120 to 140 millimeters. The species is characterized by a slight sexual dimorphism . The upper side of the forewings of the males is black, but depending on the incidence of light it has a strong greenish, turquoise or bluish shimmer and is streaked with dark veins. The upper side of the hind wing shimmers blue to turquoise and is darkened in the submarginal region . A series of dark arc spots run along the outer edge. There is an eye spot near the apex . The females resemble the males, have a weaker shimmer and are distinguished by some light-colored drawing elements and a reddish band of spots on the outer edge of the hind wings. All the drawings on the top shine through to the undersides of the wings, but shimmer less. Specimens of the summer generation are larger and darker in color. The hind wings have broad caudal processes.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are colored green, thickened at the front of the body, show yellow or gray horizontal stripes and have two eye spots on each side behind the head , which are to be understood as a defense against predators. There are also two yellowish tips at the end of the body.

Distribution, subspecies and habitat

The species occurs in the southeast of Russia as well as in Korea , Japan and the northeast of China and prefers to settle in deciduous or coniferous forests as well as bushy mountainous regions. In addition to the nominate form Papilio maackii maackii , native to the Amur and Ussuri regions , three other subspecies are known:

  • Papilio maackii han ( Yoshino , 1997), in China
  • Papilio maackii jezoensis Matsumura 1927 in Japan
  • Papilio maacki tutanus Fenton 1882, on Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands

Way of life

The moths fly in two generations from April to June and from July to September, sometimes also in three generations. They like to visit the blossoms of fruit trees in spring and those of rose or lily species in summer to absorb nectar. In large groups, the males often suckle liquids on stream or river banks. The caterpillars feed primarily on the leaves of various rhombus plants (Rutaceae), for example the Amur cork tree ( Phellodendron amurense ). The second generation hibernates as a doll.

Trivia

The Russian Post issued a stamp showing Papilio maackii in 1987 .
