The genus Parabuthus comprises 33 species of scorpion that are mainly native to Africa. Most representatives prefer dry habitats, such as deserts and steppes, with strong temperature fluctuations between day and night.
The distribution area of the animals is Africa, south of the Sahara and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula, along the Red Sea from Jeddah to Yemen. The distribution in Central and West Africa has not been clearly established.
Phylogenetics
The following cladogram shows the relationships between 27 different Parabuthus species on the basis of the analyzes by Prendini & Esposito (2010). Newer species were not included in the investigations, so that their position in this system is unclear (refers to Parabuthus cimrmani , Parabuthus eritreaensis , Parabuthus truculentus and Parabuthus zavattarii ).
