Robert Fayrfax
Robert Fayrfax (baptized April 23, 1464 in Deeping Gate, Lincolnshire , † October 24, 1521 in Hertfordshire , possibly in St Albans ) was an English musician and composer .
Life
Fayrfax began his professional career as a choirmaster at St. Alban's in London and in 1496 became a member of the Royal Chapel. He also took over the position of organist at St. Alban's Abbey in 1502. In 1504 he obtained the degree of Doctor of Music at Cambridge , and the same honor was bestowed on him in 1511 at Oxford . During his professional career he was under the highest protection and was supported by King Henry VIII , who continued the promotion of music at the English court that had begun under Edward IV like his predecessor Henry VII .
Robert Fayrfax created essentially sacred vocal music, including five masses , two Magnificat and several motets .
