Paraguarí ( Guaraní Paraguari ) is a city in Paraguay ( South America ). It is the capital of the Paraguarí department and is about 60 km from the capital Asunción .
Paraguarí was founded in 1775 by the governor Agustín Fernando de Pinedo . The nearby hill Cerro Porteño was the scene of a battle on January 15, 1811, in which the Argentine forces under General Manuel Belgrano were defeated by the Paraguayan forces under Colonel Manuel Cavañas. During the Triple Alliance War , Paraguarí was the terminus of the Paraguayan railway line. Artillery Regiment 1 General Bruguez has been stationed here since the 1930s .
The center of the city is the Church of St. Thomas . In a nearby rock grotto ( Gruta de Santo Tomás ), so far undeciphered hieroglyphs are shown, as well as footprints that are said to come from this apostle who, according to a legend, first brought Christianity to Paraguay long before the Spanish .
The city has around 10,300 inhabitants (2006 calculation) .
