Diaskari ( Greek Παραλία Διασκάρι Paralia Diaskari ) is a beach in the southeast of the Greek island of Crete . It is located on the Bay of Makrygialos ( Όρμος Μακρυγιαλού ) of the Libyan Sea and belongs to the local community Pefki ( Πεύκοι ) of the municipality of Sitia ( Σητεία ).

Location and description

Diaskari is located about 400 meters southeast of the tourist town of Analipsi (Ανάληψη), which merges to the west into the town of Makrygialos (Μακρυγιαλός) with its port. While Makrygialos belongs to the municipality of Ierapetra , Analipsi and Diaskari beach are part of the easternmost municipality of Crete, Sitia. In the southeast Diaskari is bounded by the hill Vigla (Βίγλα), on which there was a Minoan settlement, which today also bears the name Diaskari after the beach . Langada beach (Παραλία Λαγκάδα) follows behind Vigla .

Lounger rental in the northwest

The hinterland of the Diaskari beach is undeveloped. About 200 meters from the coast there are some greenhouses surrounded by olive groves . At the north-western end of the beach are the buildings of a tavern, which arose from the conversion of a stable , and an accommodation called "Diaskari Villa", a former warehouse . Between the two and another building where olives were pressed in the past, the asphalted narrow road leads to the beach. In the tavern, a few beach chairs are rented under thatched roofs. There are some older tamarisk trees on and around the buildings .

Diaskari beach is 360 meters long and its maximum width is 35 meters. Pebble and sand areas alternate. In the area facing away from the sea there are small stones scattered around. The rear border is lined with low tamarisk trees. There an unpaved road leads to about the middle of the unguarded beach, where a footpath over the Vigla to Langada connects. Diaskari was designated as a bathing water in 1996. Since 2010 the water quality has been regularly checked according to the EU Bathing Water Directive and has always been rated as excellent since 2012 . On some sections of the beach, slabs of rock form the shore area. Under the Vigla hill on the southeast side of the beach, a grotto lines the rock face. Between Diaskari and Langada is the small cave Karavospilios (Καραβόσπηλιος 'ship's cave '), which can only be reached from the sea side.

Access

At the eastern exit of Analipsi, an asphalt road leads from the road to Pilalimata (Πιλαλ einματα) towards the coast. The building of the "Diaskari Villa" and the tavern can be reached via this after about 380 meters. The beach begins behind the buildings.
