Parapotamos ( Greek Παραπόταμος ( m. Sg. ), Albanian Varfanji ) is a village and a municipality in the municipality of Igoumenitsa in the Greek region of Epirus . The name translates as 'next to the river', which indicates its location on the Kalamas River .

history

Most of the residents of Parapotamos were relocated from Lambanitsa for agricultural reasons after the Second World War . To this day there are numerous farmers who use the fertile soil on the Kalamas River.

In 1919 the place was recognized under the name Varfani (Βάρφανη) as a rural community (kinotita) , in 1928 it was renamed Parapotamos. In 1990 Parapotamos municipality (dimos) was expanded, and in 1997 some neighboring municipalities were added. In 2010 this community was incorporated into Igoumenitsa and has since formed a district of the same.

The local community Parapotamos houses 754 residents and has a high school and a pharmacy. There are several cafes as well as restaurants.
