action

The 30 year old Hugi works as a teacher in an Icelandic village where only 169 people live. He likes the peacefulness of the region between the mountains. Nothing exciting or unforeseen happens here, and you rarely meet anyone on the street. Hugi has only contact with two other members of Alcoholics Anonymous.

The peace is suddenly disturbed when Hugi's father Veigar announces his visit, whom he has not seen for years. In contrast to Hugi, Veigar is a young at heart who has just returned from a trip from Thailand. Hugi decides to welcome Veigar with open arms, but already regrets this decision when he arrives. It is difficult for both of them to find each other, but gradually they realize that their respective life plans are just excuses not to have to deal with themselves. Finally the two men approach each other again.

criticism

Boyd van Hoeij wrote in The Hollywood Reporter that following "his directorial debut Either Way , Sigurdsson re-explores the male psyche through the prism of a complicated friendship". Compared to Either Way , the "tone is less obviously funny or dramatic, but rather thoughtful, even if the varied film music occasionally accelerates the otherwise leisurely pace". The acting achievements were also emphasized, especially by Björn Thors in the role of Hugi: "The representations are so lively that they draw the viewer into the story and thankfully Thors [...] is consistently convincing."

Awards

At the Icelandic film and television award Edda , Helgi Björnsson and Nanna Kristín Magnúsdóttir won the awards for best supporting actor, while the film itself received ten other nominations.

The Hollywood Reporter , July 8, 2014, accessed on March 22, 2016 : “Like in his successful debut feature, Either Way, […] Sigurdsson again explores the male psyche through the prism of an uneasy friendship […] the Tone of the film is less overtly comic or dramatic, instead opting for a more contemplative register, even if the eclectic score occasionally accelerates the film's otherwise leisurely tempo. [...] The acting is thus vital to draw viewers in and thankfully Thors [...] is always convincing. "
