Park Byeong-seug (born January 25, 1952 in Daejeon , South Korea ) is a South Korean politician . He has been Chairman of the South Korean National Assembly since June 5, 2020 . Until his election as Speaker of Parliament he was a member of the Deobureo-Minju party to, is currently, however, pursuant to the provisions non-party .
Career
Park studied law at Sungkyunkwan University and communication studies at Hanyang University . He then worked for the daily JoongAng Ilbo as a correspondent in Hong Kong . During the Tian'anmen massacre , Park reported on the arrest of Zhao Ziyang .
Since 2000 he has represented seat A of the western constituency of his hometown Daejeon in parliament. After the parliamentary elections in South Korea in 2020 , Park was elected as the new chairman of the National Assembly, succeeding Moon Hee-sang . In his election he received 191 of 193 votes. The largest opposition party, the Mirae-tonghap party , left the chamber in protest and stayed away from the vote.
