Park Choon-ho (born  April 15, 1930 in Namwon , South Korea , †  November 12, 2008 in Seoul ) was a South Korean lawyer . From 1996 to 2008 he worked as a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea .

Life

Park Choon-ho studied political science at Seoul National University until 1959 , followed by studies in applied linguistics at Edinburgh University until 1965. In 1971 he received his doctorate in international law there . Until 1982, Park was a research fellow at Harvard Law School (1972-1988) and at the East-West Center, Hawaii (1978-1982). Until 2001 he was Professor of International Law, first at the University of Korea (until 1995), then at Seinan Gakuin Daigaku , Japan.

Park was a member of the United Nations ( UN ) Third Conference on the Law of the Sea from 1974 to 1995 , where he represented both South Korea and the International Law Association , and the Preparatory Commission for the International Seabed Authority and the International Tribunal for the Sea. From 1997 he was also a member of the Institute for International Law . Since October 1, 1996, Park was a judge at the International Tribunal for the Sea in Hamburg.

Park received the Distinguished Scholarship Award from the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Korea in 1989 and was Distinguished Professor of the Graduate School of International Law at the University of Korea from 1997 to 2001 and received the Doctor of Law (honoris causa) from the University of Edinburgh in 1998 .

Park has been the co-editor of several legal journals since 1977, particularly on international and maritime law.
