Parkinson's rainbow fish ( Melanotaenia parkinsoni ) is a freshwater fish species from the rainbow fish family (Melanotaeniidae). It occurs in south-eastern New Guinea in small rivers flowing towards the south coast. The Australian ichthyologist Gerald Allen caught the species in two small tributaries of the Kemp Welsh River about 75 km southeast of Port Moresby and in a small stream about 3 km west of Alotau on the eastern tip of New Guinea. Parkinson's rainbow fish may be between Port Moresby and Milne Baywidespread. It was named in honor of Brian Parkinson, a regular participant on Allen's ichthyological collecting trips to New Guinea.

features

Parkinson's rainbow fish has an elongated, laterally strongly flattened body and is usually 12 cm, in rare cases up to 15 cm long. It is silvery in color, has a pink breast and narrow orange bands between the rows of scales. The adult males have large, bright orange spots on the back of the body and bright orange fins with dark edges. Another shape, also from the Kemp Welsh River, shows golden yellow spots and fins. In older fish, the spots can gradually flow together so that the entire rear half of the body is orange or golden yellow. In some males, the dorsal fins and anal fin become larger with age and then become frayed in appearance. Females are rather plainly colored.

habitat

Parkinson's rainbow fish lives in the moderately to fast flowing, clear rivers of the lowland rainforest. The temperature is between 27 and 30 ° C, the pH value between 7.6 and 7.8.
