In addition to the lower house deputies, 40 out of a total of 71 senators were directly elected. As in the European Parliament elections, the electorate was divided into two electoral colleges: the French-speaking college elected 15 senators and the Dutch-speaking 25 senators. In the Brussels-Halle-Vilvoorde special constituency, the citizens themselves decided which college to choose by choosing a French-speaking or Dutch-speaking party wanted to belong.
The winner was the joint list of the Flemish Christian Democrats (CD&V) with the conservative N-VA, which won three Senate seats. As in the chamber elections, the Social Democrats (PS and SP-A) lost in both parts of the country, the Greens (Groen! And Ecolo) gained in both parts of the country. The Walloon Liberals (MR) won one Senate seat, the Flemish Liberals (OpenVLD) lost two seats. The Flemish right-wing liberal LLD, which ran for the first time, won a seat in the Senate.

Government formation
The Verhofstadt II government, made up of VLD, PS, MR and SP-A, lost 22 seats and lost its absolute majority with 75 MPs.
The chairman of the victorious CD-V, Yves Leterme , who was entrusted with the formation of a new government on July 15 , gave up the contract on August 22, as the Flemish and Walloon parties could not agree on a larger one for the regions in favor of Flanders To grant autonomy.
After Leterme failed a second attempt to form a government on December 2nd, the previous Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt was entrusted by King Albert II with the formation of a transitional government under public pressure . On December 21st, the Verhofstadt III government consisting of CD&V, MR, PS, Open VLD and CDH was sworn in.
After the parties agreed to reform the federal structures, Verhofstadt resigned and the Leterme I government , which was also based on CD&V, MR, PS, Open VLD and CDH, was sworn in on March 21, 2008.
