from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2014 general election in North Korea was the election of the 13th Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea . It took place on March 9th and was the first parliamentary election in North Korea since Kim Jong-un was proclaimed "Supreme Leader" of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on December 29th, 2011 . The election date was announced on January 8, 2014 by the state news agency KCNA .

The election was criticized as a sham election by observers outside the country .

Electoral system

As in the last election on March 8, 2009 , only the Democratic Front for the reunification of the fatherland was allowed to vote. Only one candidate stood for election in each of the 687 North Korean constituencies. Voters could vote for or against this candidate on the ballot.

The North Korean leader Kim Jong-un , general secretary of the Labor Party of Korea , ran in the constituency " Paektu-Berg " No. 111.

All North Koreans had a duty to vote. Voters who are unable to go to the polling station because of their age or illness could put their ballot paper in a mobile ballot box.

Result

With all eligible voters participating, Kim Jong-un received 100 percent of the vote and was thus elected to the 13th Supreme People's Assembly.

A total of 687 MPs were elected. According to official figures, the voter turnout was 99.97 percent. In the last election in 2009, the government said the turnout was 99.98 percent.
