Choe Pu-il (alternative name: Choi Bu-il ; born March 1944 in Haengyŏng ) is a North Korean politician of the Labor Party of Korea (PdAK) and general of the Korean People's Army , who among other things has been Minister of the Ministry of People's Security and candidate for the Politburo since 2013 of the Central Committee (ZK) and a member of the Central Military Commission .

Life

Choe joined the Navy of the Korean People's Army in September 1961 after attending Kim Il-sung Military University , but then switched to the Army of the Korean People's Army as an officer . In the following years he was active in the management committee for physical culture and sport and, among other things, became head of the associated sports group “25. April". As the leader of this elite sports group, the former basketball player had close relationships with Kim Jong-il , with whose sons Kim Jong-chol and Kim Jong-un he played basketball. On October 8, 1995, he was promoted to lieutenant general (chungchang) . During his military career he was the commander of a brigade, chief of staff of a corps and commanding general of a corps. In July 2006 he was promoted to Colonel General (sangchang) and attended a reception given by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Pyongyang in March 2007 as a companion to Kim Jong-il and in November 2007 Kim Jong-il took part in an inspection tour of army units. In February 2009 he was appointed Vice-Chief of the General Staff of the People's Army. In 2009 he was elected for the first time as a deputy of the Supreme People's Assembly and has been a member of it ever since.

A few hours before the 3rd party conference and the plenum of the PdAK Central Committee, which took place on September 28, 2010, Choe was promoted to Army General (taechang) and during this conference to a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the PdAK and a member of the Central Military Commission elected. On October 10, 2010, he was the leader of the military parade to mark the 65th anniversary of the Labor Party of Korea. In 2012 he was briefly chief of the operations department of the General Staff and at the same time First Vice-Chief of the General Staff of the People's Army. However, he was downgraded to Colonel General again in 2012. In February 2013, he was appointed Minister for People's Security by Kim Jong-un . In addition, on March 31, 2013, he was also elected a candidate for the Politburo of the Central Committee and, on April 1, 2013, as a member of the National Defense Commission. On July 11, 2013, he was promoted back to army general and was head of a delegation on an official visit to Mongolia in September 2013 .

In May 2014, Choe Pu-il was blamed for the collapse of a residential building in Pyongyang . Like other leaders in the country, he has been on the US government's sanctions list since July 2016 .
