Pak Pong-ju (born April 10, 1939 in Sŏngjin , then the Japanese Empire , now North Korea ) is a North Korean politician and economic function . He served as head of government of North Korea from 2004 to 2007 and again from 2013 to 2019.

Life

Pak became director of the Ryongchon Food Factory in P'yongan -pukto Province in 1962 . In October 1980 he became a candidate for the Central Committee of the Labor Party of Korea (PdAK). From May 1983 he was vice-chairman of the PdAK committee for light industry and from March 1994 vice-chairman of the committee for the monitoring of economic policy. In the same year he took part in the preparations for the funeral service for the late President Kim Il-sung . Among the 273 officially entrusted with this task, he was ranked 188, which indicates that Pak was at the time in the leadership elite of North Korea a rather subordinate position. Even so, in September 1998, under Prime Minister Hong Sŏng-nam, he was appointed Minister of Chemical Industry. Since September 3, 2003 he himself was Prime Minister of North Korea. The Supreme People's Assembly deposed him on April 11, 2007 and elected Minister of Transportation Kim Yong-il as his successor. The removal of Pak Pong-ju is said to have been preceded by a conflict over economic policy. The course pursued by Pak Pong-ju is said to have been criticized for being too market economy or capitalist . During his time as head of government, Pak Pong-ju accompanied the North Korean ruler Kim Jong-il on trips through North Korea and the People's Republic of China .

On April 1, 2013, during the seventh session of the 12th Supreme People's Assembly, he was reappointed chairman of the Council of Ministers and swore the oath of office before parliament. The appointment of the close confidante of Kim Jong-us aunt Kim Kyŏng-hŭi is interpreted as a step to further consolidate the power of the Kims after the death of Kim Jong-il .
