Hong Song-nam (born October 2, 1924 in Cheongju , then the Japanese Empire , now South Korea ; † March 31, 2009 ) was a North Korean politician.
Hong Song-nam graduated from Kim-Il-sung University in Pyongyang . He then studied electrical engineering at the Prague Technical Institute. From 1954 he worked in the North Korean Ministry of Heavy Industry .
In 1964 he became a member of the Central Committee of the Labor Party of Korea (PdAK) and was Minister for Heavy Industry from 1971. From 1973 to 1975 he was deputy chairman of the administrative council and from 1973 to 1977 chairman of the state planning commission.
From 1982 Hong was the first secretary of the PdAK in the P'yŏngan-namdo province . Since 1986 he has been a member of the Politburo and since 1987 again Deputy Chairman of the Administrative Council and Chairman of the State Planning Commission. From 1990 to 1997 he was Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers. In 1997 he replaced Kang Song-san as Chairman of the Council of Ministers ( Cabinet Hong Sŏng-nam I ) and was re-elected as head of government after the parliamentary elections in 1998 ( Cabinet Hong Sŏng-nam II ). After the 2003 elections , he was replaced by Pak Pong-ju .
