The Kim-Il-sung University ( Kor. 김일성 종합 대학 , 金日成 綜合大學 , revised Romanization Gim-Il-seong-Jonghabdaehag ) was opened on October 1, 1946 in Pyongyang and is the first university in North Korea . It is located on Kumsong Street in Taesŏng-guyŏk District, Ryongnam-dong District.
Its establishment goes back to a decision of the Party of Labor of Korea in July 1946, and it was named after the "eternal president" Kim Il-sung . During the Korean War , the university hid in what is now P'yŏngsŏng , where a memorial is now located.
Binding admission requirements include a recommendation from the secondary school and a member of the party . Admission requires the fulfillment of three main criteria: academic degrees, a life in accordance with party and society and the status of the applicant. This is defined by the party affiliation of the applicant's parents and according to the criterion whether the family was viewed as “proletarian” at the time the party was founded.
The politician and later refugee Hwang Jang-yop was temporarily the main lecturer for philosophy at the university and from April 1965 its president.
The university is depicted on the front of the 1992 5 won note .

There are three elevators in the university skyscraper, the middle one of which was used when Kim Il-sung visited. The elevator is therefore protected as a relic and is no longer released for public use. For a corresponding reason, the table in the university reading room, where Kim Jong-il sat during his student days, is covered with a white cloth.
