Paek Nam-sun (born March 13, 1929 in the province of Kankyō-hokudo , former Japanese Empire , today's North Korea ; † January 2, 2007 ) was the foreign minister of North Korea from 1998 to 2007 .

Life

Paek Nam-sun graduated from Kim-Il-sung University in Pyongyang . He began his political career as vice-chairman of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Labor Party of Korea . From 1972 to 1979 he was ambassador to Poland . He attended the 6th Inter-Korean Red Cross Meetings in Seoul in May 1973 . He took part in the preliminary meeting between the two Vice Prime Ministers of South Korea and North Korea in June 1994. In his position as head of the secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland , which he held from 1990 to 1998, he traveled to South Korea a total of four times for bilateral talks.

His appointment as Foreign Minister in 1998 came as a surprise to observers because he had relatively little experience abroad. Compared to his five predecessors in this office ( Pak Hon-yong , Nam Il , Pak Song-chol , Ho Dam , Kim Yŏng-nam ), he appeared to be lower in the internal hierarchy. He survived a major cabinet reshuffle in 2003 without any damage.

He was considered the most important contact person abroad and was called an expert on South Korea.

The American news agency Associated Press quoted the official Chinese news agency Xinhua on January 4th , according to which Paek Nam-sun, who suffered from kidney disease, died of kidney failure on January 2nd.
