Nam Il (born June 5, 1913 in Kyŏngwŏn , Kankyō-hokudo sub -province , Chōsen Province , former Japanese Empire , now North Korea ; † March 7, 1976 in Pyongyang , North Korea) was a North Korean military man and politician.
Nam Il studied in the Soviet Union until September 1939 . As a captain in the Red Army , he fought in the Battle of Stalingrad . As chief of staff , he took part in the Battle of Warsaw . In 1945 he came back to Pyongyang , his Korean homeland, with the Soviet troops . In 1946 he was a member of the Provisional People's Committee. Nam was a member of the Supreme People's Assembly since 1948, the year the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was founded .
As Chief of Staff of the Korean People's Army , Nam took part in the Korean War and signed the ceasefire agreement with US General William Harrison in Panmunjeom in July 1953 .
After the war, Nam was the Foreign Minister of North Korea from 1953 to 1967 .
