Kim Pyong-il (born August 10, 1954 in North Korea ) is a North Korean diplomat , half-brother of the former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and son of the country's founder Kim Il-sung, who died in 1994 . He was North Korea's Ambassador to Poland from 1998 to 2015 .

Family background and early life

Kim Pyong-il was born as the son of the North Korean state founder Kim Il-sung and his second wife Kim Song-ae . In addition to his biological brother Kim Yong-il (not to be confused with the former North Korean Prime Minister Kim Yong-il ) he is the younger half-brother of the North Korean state leader Kim Jong-il, who died in December 2011, and has a younger half-sister with Kim Kyung-hee.

Kim Pyong-il graduated from Kim-Il-sung University in Pyongyang with a degree in economics . From home he was also obliged to complete military training at the state war academy. He achieved the rank of battalion commander.

Diplomatic career

From 1979 Kim Pyong-il was sent to various representations of North Korea within Europe . This was supposed to weaken his influence on politics in North Korea.

His first post as a diplomat of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was the former Yugoslavia . Even before the collapse of the multi-ethnic state and the outbreak of political change in Central and Eastern Europe, he was appointed North Korea's ambassador to Hungary in 1988 . However, when the political change began in Hungary in 1989 and the country established relations with South Korea , he was transferred to Bulgaria . He came to Finland in the early 1990s , where he stayed until the North Korean embassy closed in 1998.

When his father Kim Il-sung died in 1994 , Kim Pyong-il was allowed to travel to Pyongyang for the funeral, but his name was not on any of the official lists.

From Finland, Kim Pyong-il finally moved to Poland in 1998 , where he was also to act as ambassador. However, recognition as such was withheld for nine months until Kim Pyong-il officially submitted a certification to the Polish President. Until 2015, Kim Pyong-il lived and worked as the North Korean ambassador in the Polish capital, Warsaw . From 2015 to 2019 he was ambassador to the Czech Republic.

Private

Kim Pyong-il has two grown children, his daughter Kim Eun-song and his son Kim In-kang. Both were probably born in Yugoslavia, but studied at Polish universities. Kim Pyong-il's son Kim In-kang is married and is writing his doctoral thesis at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw.

Kim Pyong-il himself lives relatively secluded as an ambassador and rarely gives interviews. One of his regularly visited vacation spots is Boćki, with around 1500 inhabitants in the eastern Polish Podlaskie Voivodeship , where he even takes part in public events.
