Kim Il (* 1912/14 in the Chientao District , Manchuria ; † March 9, 1984 ) was a North Korean politician.

After completing his schooling in 1933, Kim Il joined the partisan group around the future North Korean head of state Kim Il-sung, which was fighting for the independence of Korea from Japan . In 1936 he became political commissar of the partisan army and in 1940, retreating from Japan's expansion in Manchuria, went to Vyatskoye in Siberia with Kim Il-sung .

After the capitulation of Japan , he returned to the Korean Peninsula and was appointed first secretary of the Communist Party in the P'yŏngan-pukto district. In 1946 he became a member of the Central Committee and the Politburo . From 1947 he worked in the Ministry of National Security. In the mid-1950s he was actively involved in the elimination of the inner-party groups that stood in the way of Kim Il-sung's sole rule. At that time he was Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers as Minister of Agriculture.

After the constitutional amendment in 1972, Kim Il-sung took over the newly created office of President. Kim Il took over the vacated position of Prime Minister (Chairman of the Council of Ministers) and remained in this until his health-related resignation in 1976. After that, he held the representative office of Vice President until his death.

Kim Il died in 1984. He was considered number two in North Korea's party hierarchy.
