General election in Somalia in 1964
The 1964 general election in Somalia took place on March 30, 1964 and was the first election since Somalia gained independence in 1960.
Somalia emerged from the union of British Somaliland and the Italian Somalia Trust Territory . The parliaments of the two territories were also merged. The last election was in Italian Somaliland in 1959 and in British Somaliland in 1960 .
Results
The Somali Youth League (SYL) won 69 of 123 seats. 22 seats went to the Somali National Congress (SNC), 15 to the Somali Democratic Union (SDU), nine to the Somali Independent Constitutional Party (HDMS) and eight to other parties.
