Presidential elections in Somalia 1986

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1986 presidential elections in Somalia were held on December 23, 1986; it was the first time that a public election for the President of Somalia has been held.

At that time, however, the country can be regarded as a socialist one-party state , in which the Somali Revolutionary Socialist Party was the only legal party to exercise power. Its leader, incumbent President Siad Barre , was also the only candidate and was officially re-elected with 99.9% of the vote. It was the last national election held before the government was disintegrated in the Somali Civil War .
