General election in Somalia 1979

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

General elections were held in Somalia on December 30, 1979 .

It was the first since Somalia's parliamentary elections in 1969 and the first to be held under the new constitution after it was adopted in the constitutional referendum in August 1979 . Since then, Somalia could be considered a socialist one-party state .

As a result, the Somali Revolutionary Socialist Party became the only party allowed to vote. The voters were only asked whether they would vote for or against the nominated candidates. If the candidate was rejected by a majority, a new candidate was nominated.

Officially, 99.91 percent of the electorate voted for the proposed candidates and the party occupied all 171 seats in the popular assembly . The assembly elected Siad Barre as President of Somalia , who in turn appointed six more members to the assembly.
