from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1969 Somalia parliamentary elections were held on March 26, 1969 and were the last free elections in Somalia before Siad Barre took power that same year and banned all parties.

The local elections were held at the same time. Almost 900,000 voters cast their votes.

The Somali Youth League achieved 73 seats with 33.24% of the vote, the Somali National Congress eleven, the Somali Independent Constitutional Party eight, the Somali African National Union (SANU) six, the Partito Liberale Giovani Somali (PLGS) three and the SDU two. 38.79% of the vote was split between other parties, which together won 20 seats. Often these were individual representatives who ran for their respective clan .

As in the 1964 elections , the majority of those who had previously been voted out (77 of 123) were voted out.

Several candidates switched to the successful parties after the election. The SYL faction grew from 73 to 109 members by the end of May 1969. By forming a coalition with the eleven representatives of the SNC, the SYL finally got 120 of the 123 seats.
