Parodia commutans is a species of Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet commutans comes from Latin , means 'changeable' and refers to the variability of the species.
description
Parodia commutans usually grows individually. The spherical shoots briefly become cylindrical with age. They reach heights of growth of up to 30 centimeters and a diameter of 16 centimeters. The top of the shoot is woolen in white. The 13 to 14 straight ribs are barely notched. The areoles on it are white. Initially two to four, later there are four to six, the central spines are sub- spines , flexible, yellowish brown and 2 to 6 centimeters long. The upper ones are hooked, the lower ones strongly curved. The first twelve, later 14 to 16 thin, flattened, straight, white, brown or yellowing radial spines are 0.5 to 3 centimeters long.
The yellow to copper-colored yellow flowers are up to 3.5 centimeters long. The pericarpell is covered with white wool and small yellowish or reddish scales. The scar is light yellow. The light green to yellow or red cylindrical fruits up to 5 inches long. The fruits contain small black seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Parodia commutans is common in the Bolivian departments of Potosí , Chuquisaca and Tarija at altitudes of 2900 to 3200 meters.
The first description by Friedrich Ritter was published in 1964. Nomenclatory synonyms are Parodia maassii var. Commutans (F.Ritter) Krainz (1967) and Bolivicactus commutans (F.Ritter) Doweld (2000).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
