Parodia erinacea is a species of Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet erinacea is derived from the Latin word erinaceus for 'hedgehog' and refers to the prickly thorns of the species.

description

Parodia erinacea grows individually. The light to dark green, depressed spherical, spherical or short cylindrical shoots reach heights of growth of up to 15 centimeters and diameters of 6 to 30 centimeters. Older specimens have a heavily covered shoot apex. The twelve to 30  ribs are sharp-edged. The areoles are located in the notches. The awl, straight to strongly curved thorns are whitish to gray or brown in color. The thorns have a length of up to 2 centimeters. There can be a single central spine. The two to twelve radial spines are mostly on the shoot surface.

The shiny yellow flowers reach lengths of 3 to 5 centimeters and diameters of 4 to 7 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are short and covered with dense brownish wool. The scar is red. The pink or reddish, elongated to club-shaped fruits are partly bare. When ripe they are dry and hollow. The fruits are up to 4 inches long. They contain bell-shaped seeds that are finely roughened.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Parodia erinacea is common in southern Brazil , northeast Argentina, and Uruguay .

The first description as Cactus erinaceus by Adrian Hardy Haworth was published in 1819. Nigel Paul Taylor placed the species in 1987 in the genus Parodia . Nomenclatory synonyms are Wigginsia erinacea (Haw.) DMPorter (1964) and Notocactus erinaceus (Haw.) Krainz (1966).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
