Parodia herteri is a species of plant in the genus Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet herteri honors the Swiss botanist and doctor Wilhelm Herter (1884–1958).
description
Parodia herteri usually grows individually. The spherical to elongated spherical shoots reach a diameter of up to 15 centimeters. The approximately 22 ribs are clearly humped and notched. The areoles on them are brown. The four to six straight central spines are reddish brown. They have a length of up to 2 centimeters. The eight to eleven white radial spines have a brownish tip and are up to 2 centimeters long.
The more or less purple flowers have a lighter throat. They reach lengths of up to 4 centimeters and fade a little with age. The scar is bright red. The reddish, spherical fruits reach a diameter of up to 2 centimeters. They contain dull black, cap-shaped to somewhat spherical seeds that are finely tuberous.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Parodia herteri is common in the Bolivian department of Cochabamba and in Uruguay .
The first description as Echinocactus herteri by Erich Werdermann was published in 1936. Nigel Paul Taylor placed the species in 1987 in the genus Parodia . Nomenclatory synonyms are Notocactus herteri (Werderm.) Buining & Kreuz. (1950) and Ritterocactus herteri (Werderm.) Doweld (1999).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. as critically endangered.
