Parodia nivosa is a species of the genus Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet nivosa comes from Latin , means 'full of snow' and refers to the white thorns of the species.

description

Parodia nivosa grows individually. The cloudy green spherical to short cylindrical shoots reach heights of growth of up to 15 centimeters and a diameter of 8 centimeters. The apex of the shoot is covered with thick white wool. The up to 21 ribs are arranged in a spiral and strongly subdivided into conical cusps. The areoles on them are white. The four white central spines are straight and bristle-like. They have a length of up to 2 centimeters. The approximately 18 fine bristle-like radial spines are white and 1.5 to 1.8 inches long.

The bright red to dark red flowers reach a diameter of 2.5 to 3 centimeters and lengths of up to 3 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with wool and bristles. The scars are light yellow. The initially pink spherical fruits are gray when ripe. They have a diameter of 3 to 5 millimeters. The fruits contain shiny brown (or black?) Seeds 0.5 millimeter long that are smooth or slightly textured.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Parodia nivosa is widespread in the Argentine province of Salta in the Quebrada del Toro and possibly in the province of Jujuy at altitudes of 1700 to 2500 meters (rarely up to 3200 meters).

The first description by Curt Backeberg was published in 1934. Synonyms include Microspermia nivosa Frič & Kreuz. (1935, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 32.1c and 36.1) and Parodia faustiana Backeb. (1936).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
