The Parrot Disco in flight

The Parrot Disco is a remote-controlled drone from the French manufacturer Parrot SA . In contrast to commercially available drones, which are usually designed as quadrocopters , their structure corresponds to that of a flying wing aircraft with a propeller.

The drone is controlled either by means of a remote control or via a supplied controller and a mobile app , which is available for iOS and Android .

Design, development and technology

The Parrot Disco was first presented in January 2016 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas . With the new design, the manufacturer wanted to stand out from the crowd of available drones with vertically mounted rotors to generate lift. In addition, the drone was specially developed for so-called immersion flight, in which the controlling person sees the camera images directly in front of him through special glasses ( first person view ).

It has a dynamic pressure probe for measuring speed ( Indicated Airspeed ), GPS - and GLONASS receiver, a magnetometer , an altimeter means barometer , tilt - and acceleration sensors , a Full HD - camera with wide-angle lens and numerous autopilot functions such as auto start and -landung , Autoloitering, return-to-home as well as automatic attitude and flight stabilization.

According to the manufacturer, the included battery should allow a flight time of up to 45 minutes and the remote control a range of up to 2 kilometers. According to the manufacturer, the maximum speed of the drone is up to 80 km / h.

FreeFlight

The drone is controlled via the FreeFlight app, unless it is controlled via a conventional remote control without software support. The app also enables the recording of pictures and films by the full HD camera used in the drone, which can be shared with other people via social networks such as YouTube and Instagram . As a further chargeable function, a so-called flight plan can be integrated into the app, which enables the drone to specify waypoints before the flight, which it flies off independently in the specified order.

The app also includes a screen display that enables the smartphone to be plugged into the glasses supplied so that the drone can be controlled from the cockpit perspective.
