Parruca mosque
The Parruca Mosque ( Albanian Xhamia e Parrucës ) is a reconstructed mosque in the northern Albanian city of Shkodra . It is located in the city center on Parruca Square near the City Hall and is the second largest Islamic place of worship in Shkodra.
architecture
The Parruca Mosque has two minarets about 40 meters high , which stand on the north-west wall of the main building at the respective corners in the north and west. The main building itself has a square floor plan with a side length of 15 meters. To the south-west, south-east and north-east of the main building there is a portico each , supported by columns adorned with capitals . The arcature of the porticos is characterized by raised pointed arches .
The tambour between the square structure and the dome is also square and is delimited on all sides by semi-domes. Below and above the domes there are three gable- arched windows, with which 24 small windows illuminate the interior. The main dome itself has a diameter of three meters and is two meters high. It is supported by four round arches and four flat spandrels , which again rest on four pillars.
The interior is decorated with bright color paintings. There are lawns around the mosque that extend to the sidewalks of the surrounding streets.
history
There were already two previous buildings on the site. The first building was built in the late Ottoman period in the 18th century and was donated by the local Juka family . The old Parruca Mosque at that time had a minaret and consisted of a square prayer house with a hipped roof.
Mufti Salih Efendi (1891–1978) was ultimately the initiator of the second previous building, which was to be larger and more complex than the previous mosque. During his tenure as the city's mufti - the exact years are unknown - he was supported by the Albanian government and private donors to start the new building. Sadi Pashallari was hired as an engineer, Italian masters were commissioned to decorate the interior walls, and the wooden furnishings were made by experienced brothers from the Karini family of carpenters in Shkodran . Shefqet Kraja, a famous calligrapher of his time, adorned the two 40 meter high minarets and the mihrāb . The New Parruca Mosque - as it was now called - was known throughout Albania for its colorful and lavishly created ornaments, so-called arabesques .
In 1967, however, this building was demolished as part of the communist atheism campaign . Muslims and Christians were constitutionally prohibited from practicing any religion and many historical places of worship fell victim to this policy by Enver Hoxha , including the New Parruca Mosque.
In 2006, the rebuilding of the second historical predecessor began. Exactly 40 years after the old mosque was destroyed, the new building was inaugurated on March 23, 2007.
