Pascal-François-Joseph Gossellin (born December 6, 1751 in Lille , † February 7, 1830 in Paris ) was a French archaeologist .

Life

Gosselin has made a particular contribution to the ancient geography. He made scientific journeys through a large part of Europe in 1772–74 and 1780 to lighten up dark areas of the Roman road network and then settled in Paris .

In 1784 he was elected deputy at the Conseil royal de commerce , in 1789 he was elected to the national assembly and at the same time a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres . In 1794 he was appointed to the Ministry of War by the Welfare Committee and entrusted with geographical work, and in 1799 appointed co-overseer of the cabinet of medals in Paris, which he retained under the Empire and the Restoration. In 1808 he was elected a foreign member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

His research in the field of ancient geography is, in addition to numerous individual papers and treatises, recorded in his two main works: Geographie des Grecs analysée (1790) and Recherches sur la geographie des anciens (1798–1813).
