Pat Condell (2006)

Patrick "Pat" Condell (born November 23, 1949 in Ireland ) is a British stand-up comedian , writer and internet activist. He appeared on alternative comedy shows in the UK in the 1980s and 1990s and received the Time Out Comedy Award in 1991 . Since 2007 he has regularly posted short videos on YouTube in which he primarily addresses religious issues and evaluates them from the point of view of an atheist .

Condell comes from a poor Catholic family. Today he describes himself as an atheist and says of his time at a Christian school: "When one becomes aware of the gap between what people claim to believe and their actual behavior, it is difficult to take anything seriously."

Condell's videos became widespread on the Internet. He is one of the most visited authors on the Internet portal Youtube , especially in the United Kingdom . In his message, The Trouble With Islam , he sharply attacked Islam and caused extensive discussions. Condell's supporters include PZ Myers , Richard Dawkins, and Harold Kroto . Condell is a member of the National Secular Society .

Censorship on YouTube

At the beginning of October 2008, Youtube blocked Condell's video Welcome to Saudi Britain , but removed the block shortly afterwards because many users had complained to YouTube about this censorship and had posted the video under their own user accounts. In the video, Condell harshly criticizes Britain's support for a Sharia court and describes the whole of Saudi Arabia as mentally ill for systematically abusing women .

A YouTube spokesman initially defended the blocking of the video with the website's rules, which forbid racism , pornography and so-called hate speech - that is, inciting, condescending or insulting language - in the videos. The National Secular Society was among Condell's defense lawyers , who argued that Condell did not mince his words but did not say anything untrue in the video.

Shortly afterwards, YouTube unblocked the video with the comment that after reconsidering the situation, the decision was made to publish it. Richard Dawkins , author of The God Delusion , congratulated YouTube on this decision with the words “I congratulate YouTube on an excellent decision. Pat Condell is hard-hitting, but always quietly reasonable in tone. "(" I congratulate YouTube on this excellent decision. Pat Condell wears hard bandages, but always remains reasonable in his tone. ")

Condell believes the video was blocked by Islamist activists after a so-called "flagging campaign" (multiple reporting of a video as objectionable or contrary to YouTube rules, which any user can do).

In his next video, Stop sharia law in Britain , Condell thanks his supporters as well as those who have attacked the video, because due to these attacks, the popularity of the video has increased tremendously. Furthermore, he clarified his remarks about Saudi Arabia, which he had described as mentally ill.
