life and career

Pat Welsh worked most of her acting career as a radio drama speaker in radio soap operas. In 1940 she had a small role in the feature film Her First Husband alongside Vivien Leigh , but it was her only appearance in front of the camera. Her trademark as a speaker on the radio was a rough, particularly deep voice; probably the result of years of chain smoking . Sound engineer Ben Burtt noticed her distinctive voice one day in a camera shop, which led to Pat Welsh being cast by Steven Spielberg as the spokesperson for the title character in ET - The Extra Terrestrial (1982). She initially received only $ 380 for nine and a half hours of work, and it was only after her global success that she was awarded a contract for her work. In George Lucas ' Return of the Jedi , Welsh voiced the bounty hunter Boushh the following year. In the German film versions, her roles were spoken by Paula Lepa , who had a similarly deep female voice.

Pat Welsh died of pneumonia at the age of 79, leaving behind her husband Tom Welsh, to whom she had been married since 1941. Her phrase "ET phone home.", Spoken in the film ET , was voted 15th in the most famous American film quotes by the American Film Institute .
