The Patna High Court ( Hindi पटना उच्च न्यायालय ) is a high court in India located in the city of Patna in the state of Bihar .

history

From the 1860s, the areas of today's states of Bihar , Jharkhand and Odisha in what was then British India were in the jurisdiction of the Calcutta High Court . In 1905 the province of Bengal was divided , but due to great resistance in India it had to be revised again in 1912. Ultimately, with effect from March 22, 1912, the new provinces of Assam and Bihar and Orissa were separated from the province of Bengal. It was decided that the new province of Bihar and Orissa should also have their own high court. On December 1, 1913, the foundation stone for the future courthouse in Patna was laid in the presence of the Viceroy Lord Curzon . The building was officially handed over to its function on February 3, 1916, again in the presence of the Viceroy. On March 1, 1916, it began its work in a solemn ceremony. In terms of judicial organization right down to outward appearance, the court fully followed British traditions, including the judge's dress with red judge's robes, wigs, black knee breeches , silk stockings and crooked patent leather shoes .

The court initially had a presiding judge ( chief justice ) and six other judges ( puisne judges ). In 1937 the province of Bihar and Orissa was divided into the two provinces of Bihar and Orissa . However, the Patna High Court retained jurisdiction over Orissa until July 26, 1948, when India's own Orissa High Court began its work.

After independence in 1947, the number of permanent judges was gradually increased (1947: 9, February 1950: 12, September 1952: 13, January 1956: 14, etc.). On November 15, 2000, the southern parts of the state became the new state of Jharkhand . As a result, 13 judges moved to the newly formed Jharkhand High Court . There are currently 31 permanent judges including the presiding judge on Patna High Court . Since then, the jurisdiction of the Patna High Court has been limited to the state of Bihar within its borders, which have remained unchanged since 2000.

On April 18, 2015, Indian President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the High Court.
