Patrícia Campos Mello (born April 6, 1975 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian journalist and author. She works as a foreign correspondent and investigative journalist for the Brazilian daily Folha de S. Paulo .

Life

Mello studied journalism at the Institute of Communication and Art at the University of São Paulo , followed by a degree in Business and Economic Reporting (economic journalism) at New York University . She then began writing as a journalist for various Brazilian media outlets, including Valor Econômico and Gazeta Mercantil . For the latter, she was Germany correspondent in 1999.

Mello has been writing for one of the most famous Brazilian newspapers, the Folha de S.Paulo, for several years. She mainly reports on global economic developments and international relations, including reports on the 2012 US elections and the 2011 elections in Peru. She also worked as a correspondent in Syria, Afghanistan, Gaza, Iraq and Sierra Leone.

She gained particular fame and attention when she reported on illegal campaign funding for the distribution of election advertising via social media for right-wing extremist candidate Jair Bolsonaro in the course of the Brazilian presidential elections in 2018 . She received numerous hate messages and death threats based on her report.

In addition to her journalistic work, Mello also published three non-fiction books: Índia: Da miséria à potência (in German: "India: From misery to power"), O mundo tem medo da China (in German: "The world is afraid of China") and Lua de mel em Kobane (in German: "Honeymoon in Kobane").

Appreciations

For her work, Mello received the Troféu Mulher Imprensa award in 2016 , an honor given by journalists from Imprensa magazine. In 2018, the US news magazine Time voted “The Guardians and the War on Truth” as “ Person of the Year ”, honoring investigative journalists worldwide. Mello was also explicitly mentioned in the award.
